The next best thing: hosting online holiday gatherings

There’s no denying it: the holiday season feels different when families can’t always come together in person. For many older adults, travel may be complicated, health concerns may loom large, or distance simply makes it hard to gather. Yet technology has opened a new door. Virtual celebrations, once seen as second best, are proving to be a joyful, safe, and meaningful way to stay connected. With the right mindset and a little preparation, online gatherings can truly capture the warmth of the holidays.

As a physician and journalist, I’ve seen firsthand how emotional well-being influences physical health. Staying connected to loved ones is not just a luxury—it’s vital for seniors’ mental and physical resilience. That’s why online holiday gatherings deserve a closer look, not as a compromise, but as a creative, health-conscious alternative.

Why online gatherings matter for seniors’ health and happiness

Loneliness and isolation can take a toll on health, particularly for older adults. Studies show that seniors who remain socially engaged have lower risks of depression, cognitive decline, and even cardiovascular issues. Online gatherings bridge the gap when hugs and handshakes aren’t possible, offering laughter, conversation, and the comforting rhythm of traditions.

While nothing can fully replace sitting around a holiday table together, virtual celebrations create continuity. Seeing familiar faces on a screen, hearing family voices, and sharing stories all help preserve emotional ties. In this way, the holidays still carry their power to bring joy, gratitude, and hope.

    Making technology simple and stress-free

One of the biggest hurdles seniors face with online gatherings is the technology itself. The good news is that platforms like Zoom, FaceTime, and Google Meet have become more user-friendly than ever. A few small steps can make the process smooth and stress-free:

Before the big day, ask a tech-savvy family member to walk you through the setup. Test the microphone, camera, and internet connection. Write down step-by-step instructions or keep a “cheat sheet” handy to build confidence. On the day of the gathering, log in a few minutes early to avoid feeling rushed.

Remember: perfection is not the goal. A little patience, and sometimes a sense of humor, go a long way when technology hiccups arise. What matters most is being present, not flawless streaming quality.

Creative ways to keep traditions alive virtually

The holidays are rich with rituals—singing carols, sharing meals, exchanging gifts. Many of these traditions can be adapted to an online setting with creativity. Families can plan a coordinated menu where everyone prepares the same dish and eats together on camera. Children can perform songs or poems for grandparents. A shared slideshow of old family photos can spark laughter and storytelling across generations.

Games work beautifully online too. Trivia, holiday-themed bingo, or even a virtual cookie-decorating contest can turn a simple video call into a festive event. By leaning into these creative adaptations, families keep the heart of their traditions alive, even when miles apart.

    Balancing safety, connection, and well-being

Choosing an online celebration is not only convenient but also a wise decision for health. Seniors often carry higher risks for complications from seasonal illnesses, including flu and COVID-19. Gathering virtually eliminates that concern while still fulfilling the human need for connection.

It’s also important to remember that online gatherings can reduce stress. There’s no travel to arrange, no exposure to crowded airports, and no exhaustion from long journeys. Seniors can enjoy the comfort of home while still feeling part of the family circle. This balance—safety, connection, and well-being—is the real gift of going virtual.

The holidays are ultimately about love, togetherness, and tradition. Online gatherings may not look like the celebrations of the past, but they carry the same spirit. For seniors, they provide a chance to protect health while strengthening family bonds. Far from being a second choice, virtual celebrations can be the next best thing—an opportunity to embrace both safety and joy.

This holiday season, don’t let screens feel like barriers. Instead, see them as windows that open to warmth, laughter, and shared memories. Because connection, in any form, is what makes the holidays truly special.
