Natural remedies for age-related memory loss

Many people notice changes to their memory as they get older. There are proven lifestyle steps that help protect thinking skills, and a wide range of supplements marketed to support memory and brain health. Learn how supplements fit into a broader plan in our NeuroVera review can help you weigh options alongside lifestyle measures.

Understand the difference: normal ageing vs concerning changes

Occasional forgetfulness is a common part of ageing. Worrying signs include steadily worsening memory that affects everyday tasks, confusion about time or place, or trouble finding the right words. If you or a family member notice these changes, contact your GP for assessment — some causes are treatable.

    Evidence-based lifestyle approaches

Strongest evidence supports non-drug approaches to help preserve memory and reduce dementia risk. These are practical, low-risk steps you can start now.

    • Physical activity — Regular aerobic and strength exercise is linked to better thinking skills and mood. Aim for activity you enjoy: brisk walking, cycling, swimming or classes.
    • Heart-healthy diet — Diets such as the Mediterranean or MIND pattern (fruit, vegetables, whole grains, oily fish, nuts and olive oil) are associated with better cognitive outcomes.
    • Quality sleep — Poor sleep and conditions such as sleep apnoea can affect memory. Keep a regular sleep routine and speak to your GP if you snore heavily or feel very sleepy in the daytime.
    • Mental stimulation — Learning new skills, doing puzzles, reading, or taking classes helps maintain cognitive reserve.
    • Social engagement — Staying socially active supports brain health and reduces isolation.
    • Manage vascular risk — Control blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and stop smoking; these factors affect blood flow to the brain.
    • Limit alcohol — High alcohol intake can damage memory. Follow UK guidance and discuss limits with your GP.
Tip: Small, consistent changes (for example, 20–30 minutes of brisk walking most days) are easier to maintain and still provide measurable benefits for brain and heart health.

    What about supplements?

Many supplements are marketed as supporting memory or brain health. The makers of one product, for example, market NeuroVera as a plant-based formula designed to help support memory function and overall brain health. According to the maker, its formula includes Schisandra fruit extract, Gotu kola, shilajit, lion’s mane mushroom and bacopa monnieri, and is promoted as supporting pineal gland function and energy levels.

It’s important to treat these claims cautiously. While some herbal and nutritional ingredients have been studied, the quality of evidence varies widely. Most supplements are not tested to the same standard as medicines, and results in small studies do not prove a product will work for everyone.

Safety and practical guidance on supplements

    If you’re considering a supplement:

    • Discuss it with your GP or pharmacist, particularly if you take prescription medicines — herbs can interact with drugs such as anticoagulants or blood pressure treatments.
    • Check the product label for a full ingredients list and any stated manufacturing credentials.
    • Avoid products making definitive medical claims about treating or reversing dementia — lawful UK marketing should be cautious and not misleading.
    • Look for reputable retailers and clear returns or guarantees, but be wary of high-pressure sales or unverifiable review claims.

    Which ingredients have some research?

Some herbs and nutrients commonly studied include:

    • Bacopa monnieri — researched for memory and attention, with mixed results and usually small studies.
    • Lion’s mane mushroom — early research suggests possible neurotrophic effects, but clinical evidence is preliminary.
    • Ginkgo biloba — widely studied; some data suggest small effects for memory in certain groups, but not a reliable prevention strategy.
    • Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B12, vitamin D — deficiencies in these nutrients should be corrected; if you’re deficient, addressing it may help cognition.

Remember that study quality, dose and standardisation vary. Evidence that a particular ingredient can help in laboratory experiments or animal studies does not guarantee meaningful benefit in people.

    Deciding what to do

Prioritise lifestyle measures with the strongest evidence. If you want to try a supplement marketed for memory, do so as part of a wider plan and after discussing it with your GP. Keep an eye on safety, interactions and product transparency.

    When to see your GP

See your GP if memory problems affect daily life, if symptoms progress, or if you have new confusion or changes in behaviour. Your GP can check for reversible causes (for example, medication side effects, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid problems or mood disorders) and refer you for further assessment where necessary.

Combining sensible lifestyle steps with medical advice gives you the best chance of maintaining memory as you age. Supplements may have a role for some people, but their benefits are usually described by makers as supportive rather than curative, and should be considered carefully.
