How to choose a safe herbal supplement: checklist for UK shoppers

How to choose a safe herbal supplement: a practical checklist for UK shoppers

If you’re looking at herbal supplements, it helps to know what to check before you click ‘buy’. Want product recommendations? See our Moringa Magic reviews for tested options: Want product recommendations? See our Moringa Magic reviews for tested options. This guide lists sensible precautions and quick checks you can do in the UK to reduce risk when buying and using herbal products.

Understand what herbal supplements are marketed as

Manufacturers often market herbal supplements as supporting general wellbeing, energy, sleep or specific bodily systems. In the UK, remember that such marketing is not the same as proven medical evidence — claims are what the maker asserts, not regulatory proof of effectiveness or safety.

    Quick checklist before you buy

    • Check the product label for the full botanical name (genus and species) and the part of the plant used (for example, leaf, root, seed).
    • Look for a clear ingredient list, dosages and serving size — avoid products that hide amounts behind proprietary blends.
    • See whether the product carries a UK Traditional Herbal Registration (THR) number — this indicates a safety and quality assessment for traditional use claims.
    • Check for Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) or similar quality assurance statements and whether the product is made in a reputable facility.
    • Search for third‑party testing — independent lab analysis, batch testing or certificates of analysis (CoA) for contaminants and active constituents.
    • Read the safety warnings and contraindications — especially for pregnancy, breastfeeding, children or if you have long‑term health conditions.
    • Research potential interactions with medicines you take (see your GP or pharmacist if in doubt).
    • Buy from a reputable retailer or directly from a manufacturer with clear contact details and returns policy.

What the label should tell you

A good label helps you make an informed choice. It should include:

    • Botanical name (Latin) and common name.
    • Exact quantity of active ingredient or extract standardisation where relevant (eg, 10% hypericin).
    • Batch number and expiry date.
    • Manufacturer/distributor contact details and country of manufacture.
    • Allergen information and any excipients (fillers, binders, solvents).

Licensing and regulation in the UK

Herbal products are regulated differently depending on presentation and claims. Look out for a Traditional Herbal Registration (THR) number — it indicates that the product has undergone a regulatory check for quality and traditional use claims. Absence of a THR does not necessarily mean a product is unsafe, but it does mean less regulatory scrutiny. Products making medicinal claims may also be medicines that require authorisation; avoid products making dramatic health claims such as ‘cures’ or ‘prevents’ major conditions.

    Safety: contaminants and quality control

Contamination with heavy metals, pesticides, microbes or unauthorised pharmaceutical ingredients has been identified in some herbal products. Reputable brands will publish or make available third‑party lab test results or certificates of analysis (CoA) for batches. Look for testing by independent labs and, if possible, accreditation such as UKAS. If you can’t find evidence of testing, ask the seller to provide it before buying.

Tip: If a product claims very fast, dramatic benefits (eg, “lose weight quickly,” “instant detox”), treat this as a red flag — sensible supplements rarely make sensational claims.

    Interactions and vulnerable groups

Herbal ingredients can interact with prescription medicines (for example St John’s wort can affect many drugs) and may not be appropriate in pregnancy, breastfeeding or for children. If you take prescription medication, have a chronic condition, or are scheduled for surgery, check with your GP or pharmacist before starting any herbal supplement. Keep a list of the product’s ingredients to show a health professional.

    Choosing a reputable seller

Buy from established retailers, pharmacies, or directly from manufacturers with a clear physical address and customer service. Be cautious with marketplaces or overseas sellers that don’t provide detailed product information or a returns policy. Check recent independent reviews, but treat customer testimonials with caution — they can be genuine or incentivised.

    Practical shopping tips

    • Avoid very high single doses unless prescribed by a clinician.
    • Prefer products that state where and how the herbs were grown or sourced if this information is available.
    • Keep supplements in original packaging with the batch number in case of recalls.
    • Start with the lowest recommended dose and monitor for adverse effects; stop and seek advice if you experience unusual symptoms.

    When to seek medical advice

Stop using a supplement and contact your GP or NHS 111 if you develop severe allergic reactions, signs of liver problems (eg, jaundice, dark urine), severe gastrointestinal symptoms, or any other worrying changes after starting a product. For routine questions about interactions or safety, your pharmacist is a good first contact.

Herbal supplements can be part of a wellbeing routine, but they should be chosen carefully. Use the checklist above to spot risky products and favour brands that provide transparent labelling, testing and safety information.
