How to choose a vision supplement: quick guide

Choosing a vision supplement can feel confusing — bottles make bold claims, and ingredient lists use technical names. Use our Use our iGenics review as a reference when comparing supplements to compare what makers say about ingredients and manufacturing.

Step 1: Understand what supplements are marketed to do

Supplements for eyesight are usually marketed as helping to support general eye health, reduce oxidative stress, or maintain a healthy inflammatory response in the eye. Manufacturers often combine vitamins, minerals, and plant extracts into formulas modelled on research such as the AREDS or AREDS2 studies, but marketing language is not the same as clinical proof. Always read claims carefully and look for supporting evidence.

Step 2: Check the ingredient list — what to look for

Certain nutrients commonly appear in vision supplements because they have roles in eye physiology or appear in published research. When reviewing an ingredient list, consider these categories:

    • AREDS/AREDS2 nutrients — formulations inspired by AREDS/AREDS2 typically include vitamins C and E, zinc, copper and carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin. These nutrients are often included because trial protocols examined their effects in specific eye conditions.
    • Carotenoids — lutein and zeaxanthin are pigments concentrated in the retina and are commonly included in eye formulas.
    • Antioxidant vitamins and minerals — vitamins C and E, zinc and copper perform antioxidant roles in the body and are often present to support general ocular health.
    • Botanical extracts — ingredients such as bilberry, ginkgo biloba, saffron and turmeric are marketed for their antioxidant or anti-inflammatory properties. Makers may claim these help eye comfort or visual performance; such claims typically require separate supporting evidence.
    • Bioavailability enhancers — piperine (from black pepper) or specialised forms of nutrients are sometimes added to increase absorption.

Make a note of specific ingredient forms and amounts. A label that lists the compound and its quantity per serving is more informative than vague references to proprietary blends.

Step 3: Look for transparent dosing and quality details

Good-quality products will list the quantity of each active ingredient per capsule or tablet and give directions for use. If labels use a “proprietary blend” without amounts, you can’t assess whether the product contains effective doses.

    Also check for:

    • Manufacturing standards — look for phrases such as GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) which indicate basic quality controls.
    • Third-party testing — independent testing (by recognised laboratories) for purity and contaminants is a useful sign, though not all reputable makers publish certificates openly.
    • Allergen and filler declarations — many brands now label “vegan”, “no fillers” or “gluten-free”; verify these claims if they matter to you.

Step 4: Consider the evidence and manufacturer transparency

Some products state they contain “clinically-backed” ingredients. That can mean the individual components have been studied, not necessarily that the finished product has undergone clinical trials. Reliable manufacturers should:

    • Specify which ingredients are backed by research and link to sources where possible.
    • Be clear about where the product is made and by whom, and provide contact or customer support details.
    • Avoid implying the supplement treats, cures or prevents specific eye diseases unless backed by regulatory approvals (rare for supplements).
Tip: If a product highlights a long list of ingredients, check whether the label lists amounts for each one. A long ingredient list alone doesn’t tell you about dose or evidence.

Step 5: Safety, interactions and special populations

Supplements can interact with medicines or be unsuitable in some medical conditions. For example, plant extracts like ginkgo biloba may interact with blood thinners. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on prescription medication, or have a medical condition, always check with a GP or pharmacist before starting any new supplement.

Step 6: Read reviews and compare packaging claims

User reviews can highlight issues such as side effects, customer service problems, or inconsistent labelling — but bear in mind individual experiences vary. Compare packaging claims with the ingredient list and any available third-party test results.

    Example: what makers sometimes highlight

Some brands market a formula as “plant-based” or “vegan”, contain common botanicals such as ginkgo biloba, bilberry, saffron and turmeric, and say they use an AREDS2-style combination of vitamins and minerals. Others emphasise manufacturing in GMP-certified facilities and third-party testing. These are helpful marketing points to verify against the label and any published certificates.

    Final checklist before you buy

    • Does the label list each active ingredient and its amount per serving?
    • Are key nutrients from AREDS/AREDS2 and carotenoids present if that aligns with your goals?
    • Is the product made in a GMP-registered facility and/or third-party tested?
    • Are any health claims consistent with publicly available evidence, and does the maker cite sources?
    • Could any ingredient interact with your medications or conditions?

Choosing a vision supplement is about matching credible ingredient information with transparent labelling and reputable manufacturing practices. If in doubt, discuss options with your GP or an ophthalmic pharmacist.
