breast cancer survivors

A teacher who sends positive quotes each day to a friend battling cancer. A grandmother of seven who vowed to beat her diagnosis. A mother of five who took in her sister’s child after she passed away.

These central Illinois women — Missy Miller, Deborah Williamson and Rochelle Green — are super survivors who have inspired those around them in their breast cancer journey. Nominated by their peers, each will receive a makeover that includes a visit to BJ Grand Salon and Spa on the morning of the Be Aware Women’s Fair, Oct. 15. They’ll also receive free admission to the fair, various gifts and a new outfit to unveil that day.

About one in eight women in the United States (12 percent) will develop breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. However, statistics show death rates have decreased over the past 20 years thanks to treatment advances, earlier detection through screening and increased awareness. Last year, there were more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S., including our three super survivors.

Come meet them and hear their stories at 12:30 p.m. at the entertainment stage during the Be Aware Women’s Fair. The fair runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Orr Building on the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Admission is $4. A coupon for $1 off the admission price is available at BeAwareWomensFair.com. Check out our Facebook page for more information. Proceeds from the event go toward a mammography patient assistance fund.
